We live in a world where we have access to at least a million eyeshadow tutorial videos on YouTube. Yet, even after watching the 17th 20-minute-long smokey eye tutorial, it can still feel overwhelming. Too many brushes! A thousand different products! So many techniques! Have things gone TOO FAR or has makeup lost its fun?
As the elders often said, we’re all built differently and so are you! With unique eye shapes, eyelid space, and face structures, what works for a beauty influencer’s personalised look may not work for you. The ultimate ‘rule of makeup’ is simple: you do you. It takes practice, trial and error, and the occasional raccoon-eyed look to figure out what suits your face best.
Don’t let a few common makeup mistakes stand in the way of perfect eye makeup! Whether smudged eyeliner or mismatched eyeshadow, these slip-ups are totally fixable. In this blog, we’ll cover five common eye makeup mistakes and how to correct them easily.
- Not Using an Eyeshadow Primer:
Ever wondered why your eye makeup looks patchy? It’s mainly because you haven’t used a primer. One of the most overlooked steps in eye makeup is applying primer. It’s simple science: the amount of moisture/hydration varies across your face and makeup sticks to moist areas. So, without a primer to balance it out, eyeshadow can fade, crease, or slide off by midday or cluster in certain places. Use a primer that works specifically for your skin type. Opt for a mattifying primer for oily lids and a hydrating one for dry skin.
- Forgetting the Basics of Eyeliner:
We often tend to overlook the basics of applying eyeliner, thanks to 15 different ways to do it that exist on the internet. Regardless of the approach, these are the three most common mistakes people make when applying eyeliner:
- Closing your eyes when applying eyeliner: Yes, we know that it’s tempting and a part of your motor functions to close your lids whenever something pointy gets close but if your eyes are closed, then it suddenly becomes a lot more challenging to get that nice straight line or wing that you’re after, especially if you’re one of the hooded or rounded-eyed
- Overdoing the Eyeliner: While eyeliner is key to defining the eyes, applying too much can make the eyes appear smaller or overly dramatic. The fix is simple: use a soft pencil or gel liner and remember to blend the edges for a smoother, softer finish. For a more natural look, try a thin line along your lash line and build up gradually if needed.
- Not Letting Liquid Eyeliner Set: If you don’t want your eyeliner imprinted on your eyelid crease, sit back and let it dry. Keep your eyes closed and don’t blink for about 60 seconds. This is a great moment to also add “mindfulness” to your morning makeup routine.

- Not Trimming Your False Lashes:
For some of us, falsies are an essential part of eye makeup and the overall look in general. There’s just something about long and dramatic eyelashes that makes you feel good about yourself. However, most false lashes come in one size and are designed to be trimmed at home to fit your unique eye shape. If you don’t trim them, your false lashes won’t blend with your natural lashes, and they’ll stand out awkwardly and may poke you in the eye as well, especially for girls with deep-set eyes, round eyes, etc. We recommend putting only half of the lash band and making sure you trim your false lashes BEFORE you apply them.

- Applying Mascara, the Right Way!

Can applying Mascara also get technical? Yes, it can and has. Mascara often seems like the easiest thing to use but you’d be surprised how often a bad technique can lead to a clumpy, messy mascara look. Many people first apply Mascara to the lower lashes, which can result in smudging under the eyes. To prevent this, always start with the upper lashes. Don’t dab your Mascara on with short and frantic brush strokes. Apply Mascara from root to tip and allow it to dry before moving to the lower lashes. This way, you’ll avoid the dreaded raccoon eyes and create a more lifted look.
- Not Blending Eyeshadow Properly:
If you make the common mistake of throwing too much eye shadow on your lids in one go, two things happen — it’s either almost impossible to blend or you’ll likely get eye shadow falling off your lids onto your cheeks and interfering with the rest of your makeup.
Botched and unblended eyeshadow is one of the easiest ways to ruin a perfect eye look. Harsh lines make the eye makeup appear unpolished and patchy. Make sure you tap your eyeshadow brush to remove excess and always use a fluffy blending brush to soften the edges of your eyeshadow. Blend out any harsh lines, especially where different colors meet, for a smooth and well-blended finish.
